The Asian Games 2014 are scheduled to begin in Incheon on September 19, 2014.
The 2014 Asian Games are about to begin on September 19, 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. Athletes from around the continent gathered along with country officials 2 days before the start of Asia’s biggest sporting event. Organizers are apprehensive about the crowd turnout, as only 40 percent of the tickets were sold for the opening event. 45 Asian countries will be competing in 439 events across 36 sports disciplines.
There were long queues at Incheon’s airport 2 days prior to the games’ opening ceremony. The opening event will be held on September 19, 2014 and the closing ceremony will be held on October 4, 2014.
The opening ceremony will unfurl in the newly built main-stadium, where ‘Gangnam Style’ singer Psy and other Korean Pop stars will be performing. China has the biggest contingent of all, with 895 athletes. In 2010, at the Guangzhou Asian Games, China walked away with a record 199 golds and 416 medals overall.
The cost of putting up the event is $2 billion, which is only a fraction of the cost of the Guangzhou 2010 Games. North Korea have gotten a lot of attention due to their decision to field a contingent for the Games being held in South Korea.
Despite the low tickets sales for the event, South Korean officials say that they have a bigger long-term goal of positioning Incheon as an Asian financial hub.
