Koke scores as NorthEast United claim victory over Kerala Blasters in the second match of the Indian Super League.
It was Bollywood actor John Abraham’s team against cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s team at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Guwahati, India on Monday, October 13, 2014. Abraham co-owned NorthEast United beat Tendulkar co-owned Kerala Blasters, to kickstart their Indian Super League campaign. Former Malaga FC player, Koke, scored the lone goal in the match, which gave the victory to his team.
The Indian Super League is a new football league that is started in India, based on the lines of the English Premiere League. In order to create a hype, several teams were auctioned off to Bollywood cricketing celebrities. The league is co-owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries.
Kerala Blasters had several opportunities to score in the game, but failed to convert any of those chances. NorthEast United FC’s goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas held a clean sheet, as the team progressed with 3 points. In the first match of the ISL, Kolkata beat Mumbai 3-0.
Before the match, Sachin Tendulkar gave a rousing speech to the crowd present and said, “The ISL is a new beginning. The Indian Super League is a big moment for Indian football. This initiative is going to change Indian football. I feel nice to be a part of it. I think the entire nation needs to be behind this.”
An excited Koke said that the team wanted to give the crowd something to cheer about and he managed to do just. Another highlight of the match was Kerala Blasters’ keeper, David James’ save in the 33rd minute. Alexandros Tzorvas was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant goalkeeping.
