The country was chosen on the basis of its multiculturalism and constant state of celebration, even more for next year as Singapore would be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Coinciding withe the Golden Jubilee, the country is also introducing new attractions, such as the National Art Gallery and the Singapore Sports Hub.

Second place in the list went to Namibia, followed by Lithuania, Nicaragua and Ireland, The Republic of Congo, Serbia, Philippines, St Lucia and Morocco. The title had previously been given to Brazil in 2014, the host of the FIFA World Cup that year.

This is Lonely Planet’s 10th collection of the best destinations, experiences and travel trends. It is available in eight languages and sold in more than 100 countries. It is a big feat for Singapore as it is the first time it has made it to any of the publisher’s lists.

Best in Travel 2015 also named Washington DC and El Chalten in Argentina as the number one and number two cities, respectively, to visit in 2015. Gallipoli, Turkey was named the top region to visit next year, while Tunisia clinched the title of best value destinations.
