Indian batsman Rohit Sharma scores 264 – the highest ODI score by an individual.
Rohit Sharma became the first batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score 250. His score of 264 runs is the highest ever scored by an batsman, beating fellow Indian Viredner Sehwag’s unbeaten 219. In the 4th ODI against Sri Lanka, being played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, India posted a total of 404-5 in their quota of 50 overs. India lead the 5 match series 4-0.
With his double century, Rohit Sharma now becomes the only player in the history of the game to score 2 double hundreds in ODIs. His knock of 264 included a world record 33 fours and 9 sixes. His previous one came against Australia in Bangalore last year. Till 2010, in the 2961 ODIs that were played till then, no batsman in the world had scored a double century. Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar was the first man to score a double hundred against South Africa in 2010, after which the floodgates for double hundreds opened.
In the following year, Virender Sehwag scored 219* against West Indies and then in 2013, Rohit Sharma scored his first double ton. What is interesting to note is that this feat has only been achieved by Indian batsman on Indian grounds. There were a number of records that were broken by Rohit Sharma last night. Among them are the Highest ODI score, most number of boundaries hit in an innings (4s and 6s), most number of balls faced by an individual batsman in an ODI.
Rohit Sharma got plenty of help from a poor Sri Lankan bowling performance along with some sloppy fielding. He was dropped 3 times, including when he was on 4*. India is now the only team in the world to score 400+ runs in an ODI 5 times. With the World Cup only a few weeks away, Rohit Sharma has now risen as a brilliant prospect for the side.
