Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra have been selected as the brand ambassadors for the government’s ‘Incredible India’ campaign. The selection of Chopra and Mr. Bachchan came after actor Aamir Khan was made to discontinue the contract by the Centre.
Khan had in an interview angered the BJP-led government with his remarks of perceived tolerance in the country. The ‘Taare Zameen Par’ actor worked as the brand ambassador of the campaign for about a decade. The tourism ministry had shortlisted a number of celebrities from sports and other fields to be the face of ‘Incredible India’.
More suggestions had included to introduce a female personality for the ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ series which is also a part of the ‘Incredible India’ campaign which aims to attract foreign tourists. Khan stirred controversy in late 2015 when he expressed concern over rising intolerance in the country in the past few months and added that his wife Kiran Rao asked if they should move out of the country as she feared for the safety of their children.
Senior bureaucrat, Amitabh Kant said that Aamir worked against his role of a brand ambassador by terming India as an intolerant country.
