Popular Pakistani actress Meesha Shafi has accused a popular Pakistani singer Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. Shafi has earlier acted in the films like the Reluctant Fundamentalist and more. The actress has alleged that Zafar had subjected her to harassment of physical nature. On the other hand the Pakistani singer has denied the claims and has assured that he would take legal action.
The allegations by Shafi has caused a stir on the social media and many other women too have shared their views about harassment. The actress has made the allegations under the #MeToo Movement which was sparked by Harvey Weinstein scandal of Hollywood. The incident has instigated a wider awareness about sexual harassment and is encouraging people to come out and talked about it in open instead of remaining silent about it.
The society in Pakistan is deeply patriarchal, while the non-government organizations have said that large number of women face sexual harassment and violence. Meesha Shafi came and talked about the incident in open through her Twitter account said, “some issues that are very difficult to speak about as a woman, especially sexual harassment”. The actress added, “My conscience does not allow me to be silent anymore”. Shafi stressed that if this can happen to an established actress like her then it can happen to any young woman.
The actress has further alleged that she has suffered sexual harassment from Mr. Zafar more than once and described it as a traumatic experience. The recent allegations have caused a stir in Pakistan and the social media. Many women have come out in support of Miss Shafi while Zafar has maintained his stand and has denied the allegations. Ali Zafar has responded to the allegations and said, “I intend to take this through the courts of law and to address this professionally and seriously rather than to lodge any allegations here, contesting personal vendettas on social media and in turn disrespecting the movement, my family, the industry and my fans. Ultimately I am a strong believer that the truth, always prevails.” Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar have worked together in concerts and often interacted in jamming sessions.
