Asia Bizz: The good old Vespa scooters which were once popular among Indian customers , will now be returning to the market. At the Auto Expo Delhi 2012, Piaggio unveiled its latest range of scooters which will soon be available in the Indian market.

The Vespa range of scooters will come with 125 cc engines and are likely to be available in the Indian market by the month of March 2012. Piaggio will be venturing in the Indian market without a partner for the first time.

Nearly four decades ago, the company had licensed the production of the Vespa scooters to Bajaj Auto Ltd. In the year 1971, the joint venture ended and the company partnered with LML Motors in the year 1983 to make and sell the scooters in the Indian market. The venture was then ended in the year 1999.

Ravi Chopra, the chairman and MD of Piaggio vehicles said that their foray in the Indian market activates a whole new segment of style as well as fashion conscious consumers who are looking for a premium, exclusive, lifestyle offering reflecting their personalities and attitudes. Chopra added that they would like to leverage this sizeable untapped market segment which shows tremendous potential for the growth in the upcoming years.
