Asia Bizz: The head of the UN atomic agency said on March 5, 2012 that the nuclear power is safer around the world than it was a year ago during the Fukushima disaster in Japan. In a conference at its Vienna headquarters Yukiya Amano, the International Atomic Agency Head, also warned against the complacency.

Amano said that next Sunday will mark exactly one year since the very serious disaster and that Japan has come a long way since that time. The agency head added that the nuclear power is now much safer than it was a year back but warned that the nuclear safety is something that must be always be well kept every day and must never be complacent.

Amano also stated that the Fukushima nuclear crisis is the world’s worst in 25 years, which was sparked by a massive earthquake followed by a deadly tsunami on March 11, 2011. The agency also confessed that along with the natural calamity, there were also man and managerial failings that could have been avoided.

Since the incident, good progress has been made in implementing the IAEA’s nuclear safety action plan. It involved stress tests on nuclear power plants, strengthening of defenses against the natural disasters and peer reviews.
