Asia Bizz: The recent crucial assembly 2012 elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India saw the Samajwadi Party winning the majority. After the win, the party announced that it has called a meeting on March 9, 2012 where the new Chief Minister of the state will be elected and SP leaders seem to be in favor of Akilesh Yadav.
The party leaders have publicly said that Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has been the chief minister all this while, will be elected as the new chief minister. But political analysts state that there are chances that Yadav’s son Akhilesh could be the next chief minister.
In the recent polls, Akhilesh has been widely appreciated for his performance. Yadav’s son has also repeatedly said that his father will be the next chief minister, but the 72-year-old party leader is suffering from various ailments and now wants his son to take over.
On March 7, 2012, the two met governor BL Joshi who had invited them to form the government. Popular dalit leader Mayawati quit as chief minister after poor performance in the elections. Mayawati said that the results did not favor her party and also recommended the governor to dissolve the assembly.
The Samajwadi Party grabbed 224 seats out of 403 in the legislative assembly, while Mayawati’s party was way behind with just 80 seats.
Not sure who Akilesh Yadav is? The young politician is the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Malti Devi. He has studied in India and later went on to University of Sydney in Australia to get a Masters degree in environmental engineering. The 38-year-old is married to Dimple and has 3 children.
If that’s not all, Akilesh became SP’s UP president in June 2009 and campaign duty saw him traveling more than 10,000 kms over the past 6 months and all the hard work seems to have paid off well with the historic win over Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.
