With the ever rising costs of fuel, it has now become essential to concentrate on emission control in vehicles. More and more sedans are now being powered by smaller engines which are capable of delivering as much as its larger counter parts.
Ford’s sports utility vehicle, will soon be having a one litre engine, which will be equivalent to the power of 1.6 litre engine. Even Maruti will be powering its new Ertiga with the 1.2 litre diesel engine which are also used in the compact sedan DZire.
Moreover, Toyota will also be sharing its 1.4 litre engine between the super compact Etios and Premium sedan Corolla. Renault’s sedan Fluence and small car Pulse already share the same diesel engine with a displacement of 1461 cc.
Michael Boneham the president and MD of Ford India said, “The key driver is fuel economy; Ford has done it (with a one-litre engine), by delivering 20 per cent improvement over a 1.6-litre engine in terms of fuel economy and performance – in terms of torque and power”. So though the engines used in different vehicles are the same, the difference is the turbo power of a larger engine which does not compromise on the fuel efficiency.
