The website of the Indian telecom company, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has been hacked on June 6, 2012. The hacking group Anonymous has claimed that it has hacked the website of the telco.

The hacker group said that it has hacked the website to protest the alleged censorship content on the internet. After the website it could not be accessed for at least six hours on Wednesday.

On the other hand a senior company official MK Purohit denied that the website has been hacked. Purohit added that the individual city websites for the company were working and that the company hardly used the corporate website.

The Press Trust of India reported that the website of the Anonymous Operation India web page claimed the hacking of the website which said, “we are against Internet Censorship. Instead of blocking few URLs, the ISP (MTNL) blocked the whole domain of various file sharing websites.” The website has also appealed the people to wear ‘Guy Fawkes’ masks, which have become synonymous with Occupy Wall Street protests, during the peaceful protests to be held on June 9, 2012. The group has planned peaceful street demonstrations in the cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Bangalore, Kochi, Kolkata and other cities.
