Indian star boxer Vijender Singh’s dream to be the first individual athlete to win two medals in successive Olympic Games came crashing down. Singh lost the quarterfinal bout against his Uzbekistan opponent in the men’s middle weight category.
The 26 year old was seen trying desperately but was found weak against his opponent Abbos Atoev who managed to claim victory with 17-13 in a nerve racking contest at the Excel Arena. On the other hand MC Mary Kom glided in to the semi finals in the women’s 51 KG category earlier on August 6, 2012.
All eyes were on Vijender with an assurance that India will have at least a Bronze but that did not materialize and left millions of Indian supporters disappointed. The Excel Arena was packed with Indian spectators while they waved Indian flags and cheered Vijender and the crowd decibel increased as soon as the athlete stepped in to the ring.
Singh four years back claimed the bronze medal at Beijing Olympics, but could not manage to defend his opponent Atoev who fended off his punches and launched counter attacks. On August 2, 2012 Singh claimed victory over Terrell Gausha of the US in the quarter finals. While the results were awaited, the Indian crowd went silent when the Uzbek was announced as the winner.
