On August 9, 2012 McDonald’s Japan said that it was recalling its give-away glass tumblers. The fast food giant said that it was recalling the tumblers after 78 people reported being injured by the freebies which were Olympic themed.
McDonalds said that it received about 130 complaints after they handed out the tumblers to the purchasers of Value Sets. The Value Sets included fries and soft drink during their Olympic Cheer Coke Glass Campaign in the month of June and July.
The fast food giant said that they gave away six million tumblers in Japan and some of them had glass protrusions on their edges or insides due to a manufacturing defect. Kazuyuki Hagiwara the company spokesperson said, “We received 130 complaints from our customers by Aug 7, of which 78 customers said they suffered cuts, although injuries were not serious enough to warrant their going to hospital”.
The spokes person added that the flawed metallic moulds were tom be blamed for the defective tumblers. McDonalds also assured that the customers who return their glasses between now and end of October will be given replacements. McDonalds is the largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants and serves about 68 million customers on a daily basis in 119 countries.
