Now that the situation has got in to control in many of the cities regarding the northeast exodus, the government on August 23, 2012 increased the number of SMSs to 20 per day with immediate effect. Earlier the government had limited the number of SMSs to just ten per day to avoid bulk SMSs and also to avoid circulation of panic messages.
A notification was issued by the Ministry of Communication. It has decided to revise the permissible limit of “bulk SMS/MMS to 20 in place of five with immediate effect”. The notification added, “The other conditions will remain the same”.
So this means that the mobile phone subscribers can send 20 SMSs per day. The limitation has been applied to the pre-paid as well as the post paid mobile phone users.
In terms of the MMSs the users can send only up to 20 KB data in one go during the ban period. In the past period the distorted messages and images had caused tension and panic in some of the cities in south India especially in Bangalore. The panic messages had also resulted in the mass exodus of people of Northeast from these cities. Keeping in view the situation the government on August 24 imposed a ban on bulk SMSs and MMSs for 15 days restricting them to five.
