After the Fukushima disaster hit last year, a major international conference reviewing the after effects of the disaster, wrapped up on August 31, 2012. The international conference was called for more to be done on nuclear safety.
Li Ganjie, the president of the Convention on Nuclear Safety meeting , in closing remarks said, “We have made headway in the current stage in drawing lessons from the Fukushima accident through this meeting”. Li added, “But the process of learning lessons is far from finished. The international community needs to further enhance communication and raise their awareness to a new level … and reflect upon the accident from a broader perspective.”
The president also said that measures have to be taken to avoid recurrence of similar accidents while guarding against the harm of radiation. The next extraordinary meeting of the CNS involves around 700 delegates from 75 states which are party to the 1994 convention, drawn up in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine in the year 1986.
A huge earthquake had hit Japan which followed by a huge tsunami that had swamped the Fukushima Daiichi Plant and sent three reactors in to meltdown that spewed radiation over a large area. The measures include stress tests on the power plants including emergency preparations and more international cooperation.
