Aung San Suu Kyi, on September 17, 2012 began a marathon tour of the US, which marked the latest milestone in her remarkable journey from political to globe trotting stateswoman. The Myanmar democracy leader is known for her peaceful struggle against the military rule.

Suu Kyi will be presented with Congress’ highest award during a 17 day visit which comes as the Obama administration considers easing remaining sanctions in the country also known as Burma. Myanmar in a latest step of political opening, has announced a new round of political releases just hours before the democracy leader touched down Washington. On September 18, 2012 Suu Kyi will be meeting the Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and is also likely to visit the White House.
