On October 1, 2012 the Tokyo Station Building has been opened after a restoration project which took roughly five years to complete. The Tokyo Station Building was originally constructed in the year 1914 with distinctive European Style red brick and was designed by architect Kingo Tatsuno.

The iconic Tokyo Station Building includes facilities like the high end Daimaru Department Store and the Tokyo Station Hotel which is due to open on October 3, 2012.

The Great Kanto Earthquake in the year 1923 had damaged the station but it still remains standing. Moreover, the building was later burned and fired upon in the 1945 firebombings. Postwar reconstruction had altered the picturesque silhouette of the terminal and resulted in the removal of the third floor, reconstruction efforts had even replaced the original cupolas of the station with more octagonal domes.

The reconstruction project had begun in the year 2006 and was designed to restore the Tokyo station Marunouchi Building to bring back its original charm. The Tokyo Station since the year 2000 has become a huge commercial center, and since then, hundreds of new shops and restaurants have opened up. Even the new Mitsubishi Ichigokan Art Museum had been hosting  exhibitions since the year 2009.
