Verizon Wireless’ promotions for the new Motorola Droid smartphone; in addition to a load of direct mail, newspaper, and TV ads etc for the Android-powered handsets; helped increase the sales of Google’s smartphones more than that of Apple’s iPhone – for the first time as reported on May 10.

Google Android Phone

According to reports: “Android-powered phones accounted for 28 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S., exceeding Apple’s 21 percent share during the quarter, NPD said. Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry models led the category with a 36 percent share.”

Here is some information on how Google and Android became one.
“In July 2005, Google acquired Android, Inc., a small startup company based in Palo Alto, California, USA. Android’s co-founders who went to work at Google included Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger, Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc., Nick Sears (once VP at T-Mobile), and Chris White (headed design and interface development at WebTV. At the time, little was known about the functions of Android, Inc. other than that they made software for mobile phones. This began rumors that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone market.” (Wikipedia)
