Mumbai observed a quiet weekend on November 17 and 18, 2012 following the death of a political figurehead in its entertainment capital, but despite the situation it was a good week for the Indian Film Industry. The movies ‘Son Of Sardar’ (SOS) and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ (JTHJ) opened on November 13, 2012 and despite having a mid-week releases, both did reasonably well at the box office.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “Both JTHJ and SOS saw fantastic openings and a great run at the box-office. The figures have been superb.” Although weekend sales were down, the COO of Big Cinemas Ashish Saxena said that the movies will manage to make up for losses during the next weekend.
Saxena added, “Though they lost around Rs. 2-3 cr on Sunday, they have no competition until the end of the month.” Another trade analyst Vikas Mohan also said that both movies picked up really well, but it was due to the death of Balasaheb Thakeray that they did not have any shows over the weekend, which led to a massive drop in earnings in Mumbai.
However, the actual test for both movies will begin this week. Vikas also pointed out that the only point which could go against the movies is the fact that tickets are being priced higher than usual. In just six days JTHJ has managed to make Rs 80. 73 crores, while ‘Son Of Sardar’ has made Rs 66.02 crores in the same time-frame.
