American internet corporation Yahoo Inc. said that it will shut down seven of its products soon. These include a mobile app for BlackBerry smartphones as well. The new move will be taken as the new Chief Executive Marissa Mayer takes a page from search engine giant Google Inc’s history, by eliminating unsuccessful products and designing a more streamlined approach for the future.
The company used its official blog to announce the shutdown. Jay Rossiter, the executive vice president of platforms said, “The most critical question we ask is whether the experience is truly a daily habit that still resonates for all of you today”. The recent closure has represented the company’s second group shutdown of products since Mayer became the CEO of the company, in the month of July 2012.
In recent years, multiple products closure has become a regular feature at Google. Mayer, at an investors conference, had signaled that it would cut down the line up of its apps for mobiles, noting that Yahoo will reduce 60 to 75 mobile apps, to a more manageable number like 12 to 15 apps. Yahoo informed that its app for BlackBerry will no longer be available for download as well, as this would come under the app-cutting spree. It added that on April 1, 2013, the company would stop supporting Yahoo Avatars as well.
