Indian telecom operator Reliance Communications announced on April 30, 2013, that it has finalised a roaming agreement with Aircel. The agreement has mentioned that both the companies will use each other’s mobile towers so as to improve the network coverage of 2G GSM services. At present, the company is in talks with other operators as well, to have similar agreements.
A statement was released by the Reliance Communications (RCom), which said that the arrangement would result in the addition of a total of 10,000 base stations in its network. Gurdeep Singh, the RCom president and CEO said, “We are already in advanced stages of talks with several operators across the country to put these agreements in place, and are delighted to announce the first of many such alliances today a pan-India 2G GSM ICR agreement with Aircel”.
The company went on to say that all the agreements with the existing telecom operators were likely to be completed by the end of the second quarter of the current financial year. Kaizad Heerjee, the Aircel Chief operating officer, said that the telecom industry has been facing high operational costs of late in terms of infrastructure, sales, energy and distribution.
The officials of Reliance Communications and Aircel also clarified that the network will get to use the base station of Reliance under the arrangement.
