Computer manufacturer Microsoft has revealed that Windows 8.1 will be available to consumers soon. The update will be available as a free download later in 2013. Tami Reller, Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft made the announcement at JP Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in Boston on May 14, 2013.
Later that day, the company also announced it in its official blog post. The update, formerly known as ‘Windows Blue’, will get its first public airing on June 26, 2013 at the BUILD developers conference. The operating system was originally launched in October 2012 and the company claims that it has sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses since then.
However, the product has also been criticized by consumers as well as the press. The product was mainly criticized due to the fact that the company had taken out the ‘start button’ and that it uses two competing interfaces. Further research by the press has revealed that, though 100 million licenses might be in circulation, just 58 million computers are actually working on Windows 8 while others opted to boot their computers in Windows.
Nevertheless, the company refused to take the blame regarding this matter and called the allegations bad press, claiming that journalists are looking for more publicity than focusing on the facts.
