South African politician Nelson Mandela was readmitted to the hospital on June 8, 2013, due to a renewed lung infection. Mandela was brought in a serious, yet stable condition. This is the second time for the politician to be admitted to the hospital in many months.
The president Jacob Zuma’s office released a statement which read, “During the past few days former president Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection”. The statement added that Mandela’s condition deteriorated in the morning and he was being transferred to a Pretoria hospital. The anti-apartheid politician will turn 94 on July 18, 2013.
On April 6, 2013, Mandela was discharged from the hospital after being treated for pneumonia for ten days. In just half a year, the politician made four stays in the hospital, mostly due to problems with his chest. Back in December 2012, Mandela was hospitalized for 18 days for a lung infection and gallstones surgery. That was his longest stay in the hospital after he walked free from 27 years in jail in 1990.
In March 2013, the former South African president was admitted for a scheduled check-up and during his stay, the doctors drained a build-up of fluid known as pleural effusion or water from his lungs.
