On August 22, 2013, a 23-year-old woman photographer – who was working for a city magazine – was allegedly gang-raped by five men in Mahalaxmi area on Thursday evening in Mumbai. Initial reports stated that two people went to take pictures of the mill and the young woman was on an assignment doing a story on chawls and mills in Mumbai.
A group of five men told the two people that they will require permission in order to take pictures. After that, the young woman and a man were then taken to an area where the male colleague was tied up and the girl was raped. The area of Shakti Mills is known for drug addicts and the place where the girl was raped has a dilapidated building which is completely empty.
The girl somehow managed to reach Jaslok Hospital at Peddar Road at around 10 pm and the hospital staff who treated her informed the NM Joshi Marg Police about the case. However, it is still not clear how the girl reached the hospital. So far, the identity of men and the number of them who violated her is not immediately clear. The police teams have reached the spot and are investigating the case.
So far, three drug addicts have been picked up for questioning.
