US-based tech giant Microsoft is set to release its highly-anticipated Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download and it will become available as of October 17, 2013. The release of the upgrade will provide an answer to people who had doubts regarding Windows 8, which is reportedly a very different operating system that bridges the gap between tablets and PCs.

However, Windows 8.1 also features the dual worlds which were created by Windows 8 when it was first released in October 2012. The new operating system features a touch-enabled tile interface, similar to that found in tablets. In addition to that, there is a desktop mode in which the keyboard and mouse are used also.

The update also has a new finger- and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps, but it also displays some respect for the desktop mode, which is something that over a billion users of PC are used to. The new upgrade has been introduced as it has been noticed that sales of traditional laptops and desktop computers have declined recently.

Consumers are spending more time on smartphones and tablets instead of desktops and laptops. The upgrade is free for current users of the Windows 8 and will begin rolling out at 7 am in New York on October 17, 2013.
