A brand new terminal at the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport was opened on Thursday, November 28, 2013. The new terminal is built for flights which are focused on the Southeast Asia destinations. The huge building is shaped like an airplane and is three times bigger than the other terminals combined and will be able to process around 45 million passengers on a yearly basis.
The massive terminal has around 450,000 square meters and can accommodate 194 aircraft. Following the opening of the new facility, three other terminal will be shut down. Meanwhile, flight operations began on November 28, 2013 at 6 am. Zhang Huai, the deputy general manager with Shenzhen Airport Group said, “Shenzhen airport can only become a competitive international airport by focusing more on international routes to Southeast Asian countries and regions”.
Li Lianxiang, the captain, said that he is happy to see changes happening at the airport during his 31-year-long career. Passengers inside the terminal can make use of the 25 electric-powered vehicles which can help them to move around the facility, in addition to 10 baby strollers.
The new terminal also has a chapel for religious observances. The huge size of the facility means that the check-in time will be increased from 40 minutes to 45 minutes before the flight.
