A number of fast-food workers all over the United States are gathering for a 24-hour-long protest in order to demand higher wages. About 150 protesters shut down a fast food restaurant in California for more than half an hour, which was part of nationwide strike to demand a $15-dollar-an-hour federal minimum wage.
Hundreds of fast-food workers from different cities in the US staged a day of rallies on December 5, 2013 and demanded higher wages. The workers say that their current wages are too low to feed their families and pay bills on time. One of the protesters who was dressed as Ronald McDonald protested inside the McDonald’s restaurant and demanded higher wages in Oakland.
More than 200 people filled the restaurant and many smiley employees were filmed with their cell phones. The protest also took place in New York, as well as many other cities. Protesters could also be heard outside a Wendy’s fast-food outlet and displayed their support to the nationwide strike.
Meanwhile, the US President Barack Obama backed a Senate measure to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 and specifically mentioned employees in the fast-food restaurants. While talking about the fast-food workers, Obama said that they are the ones “who work their tails off and are still living at or barely above poverty”.
