Whirlpool Corp.’s Maytag Corporation, the $4.7 billion home and commercial appliance company, is recalling almost 1.7 million dishwashers, as a result of an electrical failure in some models which have caused a fire hazard.

The Maytag dishwashers come with plastic tubs and reports say that an electrical failure in the heating element can create a fire hazard for consumers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, who announced the recall on Thursday, said that Maytag has received 12 reports of electrical failures in the dishwasher heating element. The recall includes Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand dishwashers

These recalled dishwashers were sold at departmentstores across USA between February 2006 and April 2010 at a price between $250 and $900.

The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 by Frederick Maytag and it was later acquired by Whirlpool Corp. in 2006.

Some of the brands that it owns are : Admiral, Amana, Caloric, Crosley, Dynasty, Gaffers & Sattler, Glenwood, Hardwick, Holiday, Hoover vacuums, Jade, JENN-Air, Litton, Magic Chef, Menu Master, Modern Maid, Norge and Sunray.
