The number of homeless people in Central African Republic (CAR) is increasing rapidly and the United Nations said on January 20, 2014 that it is running out of food for them, while?spreading unrest is interfering with distribution efforts.
The World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations said that 38 trucks carrying rice have been stopped at the Cameroon border and truck drivers are refusing to cross the frontier because of the possible attacks. The World Food Program in a statement said, “WFP cereal stocks are close to being exhausted and pulses too will soon run out”.
The statement went on to say that the suspension of food distributions could cause additional tension, especially among the 100,000 people who are displaced in the overcrowded airport camp in Bangui. Denis Brown, the regional director at WFP said that the main road from Cameroon into Central African Republic was a humanitarian lifeline and has been in conflict for almost one year.
Brown went on to say that the agency is planning to airlift food to Bangui airport and had already cut out rations to the town of Bossangoa. The agency’s statement also said that deliveries to other locations cannot be organized until trucks can drive safely along the routes.
