Massive earthquake in Japan caused devastation of property and claimed many lives. Researchers from Japan released a report on January 27, 2014 which said that the March 2011 earthquake has effects on 1 in 4 nursery school children who survived it. The surviving children are suffering from?psychiatric problems and?researchers have warned that if the problem is left untreated, the effects might last for a lifetime.
It was found that 25.9 percent of children aged between 3 and 5 suffer from a number of symptoms, including headaches, nausea and vertigo. Some children even exhibit worrying behavior, like violence or withdrawal.
The study conducted by the health ministry in Japan?said that children were scarred by many things, including losing their friends and seeing their home collapse, being separated from their parents or even by seeing the huge walls of water crashing in front of them. The research team – which was led by professor Shigeo Kure of Tohoku University School of Medicine – stated that if young children do not get proper care soon, they might face even more serious problems later in life.
The 9.0-magnitude earthquake claimed lives of more than 18,000 people and the incident has been termed as the Great Japan Earthquake. The natural disaster also caused the biggest nuclear disaster in the country, the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
