South Korean Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. – which is the sole operator of 23 nuclear reactors in the country – said on March 4, 2014 that it will invest 1,1 trillion won by 2015 in order to improve safety measures. So far, the KHNP has made massive efforts in an attempt to ensure the safety of power plants in South Korea, following the major disaster at Japan’s Fukushima in 2011.
The company said that it would hold a workshop on March 5, 2014 to increase awareness of nuclear energy safety and that the theme would be “Lessons from Fukushima ― We will not forget.” The KHMP will announce a nuclear industry safety charter with other companies from the industry in a meeting.
All participants of the upcoming meeting will discuss a number of issues regarding management of the power plants and their communication with the public to maintain transparency. Officials from the KHNP will give presentations which will explain about the safety measures that are developed by the firm following the Fukushima incident.
One of the officials from the company said that it is installing a control system which can withstand a magnitude of 7.0 earthquake and safely halt operations when a nuclear plant is damaged due to natural disasters. In 2012, the company made a seawall which was ten meters in height and 1.85 meters in thickness. A 2.1-kilometers wall in length was built around the Kori nuclear plants on the outskirts of Busan.
