Popular handset manufacturing giants Karbonn and Lava have revealed their plans to launch the Windows Phone-based smartphones starting from Rs. 6,000 for customers in India. The recent announcement has been made following Microsoft’s rumoured waiver of licensing fee on Windows Phone platform for select handset makers in the country to counter the proliferation of cheap Android smartphones.
Pradeep Jain, the managing director of Karbonn Mobiles said, “We will come out with four devices with Windows-based operating system by the end of May or starting of June in the price range of Rs 6,000-12,000.” The company also revealed its plans to introduce a smartphone which will feature a dual-boot function which enables the device to be booted in Android mobile operating system or Windows Phone.
The new handset by Karbonn is expected to be launched during the second half of 2014. The chef executive officer of Lava International, Hari Om Rai said that a series of Windows-based phone will be unveiled under the Lava brand by July 2014. Hari Om Rai went on to say that the upcoming handsets will be launched in the range of Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 8,500.
The Windows-based phones will represent 8 to 10 percent volume of Lava handsets starting from July 2014 or August 2014.
