The parliament of Sri Lanka has organized a red carpet welcome to the country’s championship winning cricket team and the celebratory event will be held at the House on April 9, 2014. The winning team of the ICC T20 World Cup will be welcomed by speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.

It has been reported that the House, as well as Members of Parliament from both the ruling government and the opposition will welcome and celebrate the national cricketers for their extraordinary contribution to the pride of Sri Lanka and the achievement by bringing the World Cup to the nation. The cricket team will be taken to the Guest Gallery of the Speaker at 5 pm and will remain there until 7:00 pm.

Nimal Siripala de Silva – the Leader of the House – is going to move the house to a congratulatory vote and this will be supported by John Amaratunga, the Acting Opposition Whip. The decision to felicitate the champions was made by leaders of the party on April 8, 2014, the same day when the winning team returned to Sri Lanka. The final match was played in Dhaka, Bangladesh on April 6, 2014, in which Sri Lankan team defeated Indian team in the finals.

On April 8, 2014, thousands of cricket fans lined up in the streets and thronged at the Galle Face to greet the winners of the championship.
