India’s new foreign minister Sushma Swaraj meets Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in New Delhi.
The two Asian giants China and India had their first formal talks in the Indian capital of New Delhi. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj met the Chinese counter part Wang Yi in Delhi on June 8, 2014.
Spokesperson from the Indian foreign Ministry, Syed Akbaruddin said that the meeting was held for more than three hours. Both the diplomats talked about increasing Chinese investment in Indian industrial parks. However the burning issues of border incursions in Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet did not feature on the agenda. Akbaruddin said, “Both the leaders felt there was a tremendous untapped potential for growth of economic ties”.
Earlier on, during Narendra Modi’s election campaign there was a lot of focus on protecting India’s borders from encroachment. It is a well known fact that China’s expansionist agenda has led to frequent breaching of the Indo-China border. The newly elected PM in February had warned China of giving up its territorial mindset. Modi had added that the weakness of the then Indian govt had encouraged the army of China to enter into Indian territory in 2013.
However, both the leaders seemed to have kept the uncomfortable topics aside and focussed on fostering bi-lateral economic ties.
