Mercedes Benz eyes larger consumer base in Indian market.
Germany based luxury automaker – Mercedes Benz – has expressed its confidence about increasing sales in India in 2014. Reports say that one out of every five Mercedes Benz sold in the country is either an A-Class or B-Class. This year the company is hopeful about pumping up the sales figures to double digits.
The Mercedes A-Class and the B-Class were launched in the Indian market in 2013 and are priced between Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 26 lakh. After the launch, more than 2,500 units of the A-Class and the B-Class models are running on India’s roads. A majority of the buyers are those who have never owned a luxury vehicle before.
The vice president of sales and network department at Mercedes Benz India, Boris Fritz said, “About 20 per cent of our overall volumes are coming from the A and B Class. We have many buyers who are young professionals and who are not only new to the Mercedes brand, but also to luxury.” Mercedes also added that demands are pouring in from a lot of the Tier II Indian cities like Chandigarh, Kochi, Nagpur and Raipur.
This is not only an indicator of the burgeoning Indian upper middle class, but also the Indian consumers’ rising indulgence in conspicuous consumption.
This year, the company is targeting a sales of about 9,900 units in a bid to outdo its arch rival – luxury auto brand – Audi.
