For the first time in its history, Malaysia Airlines will get a foreign head.
Malaysia Airlines has been reported to have appointed a foreigner to head the helm of operations under the planned overhaul of the drowning carrier. The new CEO will be armed with the mandate to chart the revamp over the next five years.
Reports have also indicated that apart from the CEO, another five or six personnel from various segments of the industry will be hired to further rationalize costs in their areas of expertise, without hurting service.
In September 2014, Malaysia Airlines’ major stakeholder Khazanah Nasional Bhd made public a restructuring plan worth $1.84 billion for the company that involved the dissolution and conversion of its assets to a new private company by mid 2015. The plan led to a loss of 6,000 jobs from a staff strength of 20,000.
The new CEO will take over from Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, whose contract has been extended until September 2015.
So far, the identity of the chosen CEO candidate has not been divulged, but speculations have previously arrived at many for the position, including Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jala, Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, and Axiata Group chief Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim. However, all have since dismissed these speculations.
