The magazine’s website states that a Naruto movie titled “The Last – Naruto The Movie” will open in theaters in Japan on December 6, 2014. Naruto first featured in 1999 as a comic series that was illustrated and written by Masashi Kishimoto. Since then, the series has taken several forms like TV series, movies, video games, OVAs, trading cards and music.

Japan National Tourism Organization listed Naruto as one of the three most popular series in the history of the Jump magazine, pitching it along with the likes of Dragon Ball and One Piece.

The manga follows the life of Naruto Uzumaki, a teenage ninja who aspires to be the strongest ninja in his village. Naruto is currently the best-selling Japanese comic series in the US.

While the announcement might be surprising for a few fans, the creator – Masashi Kishimoto – had announced in 2012 that the series was coming to close soon. He stated this in an interview with the AnimeNewsNetwork.
