The government has announced that it will begin to store the nuclear waste from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and its surrounding areas. The waste will be stored from two of the Fukushima towns from March 2015. March 11, 2015 will mark the completion of four years after the dreadful nuclear disaster which destroyed the Tohoku and region.
The decision was taken by the Environment Minister Yoshio Mochizuki. The announcement was made after the final stage last week after an agreement by the Futaba town to accept the facility. The plan was made about a year back but was delayed as the government was not able to finalise the landspace. The government was struggling to negotiate with the land owners of Okuma and Futaba towns.
After the long time the Okuma town took back its opposition in December 2014, while Futaba too gave its nod on January 14, 2015. The Mayor of Futaba Shiro Izawa expressed that it was a tough decision but added that this was essential and the only way to speed up the recovery process of the Fukushima Prefecture.
Many of the residents of the Futaba prefecture have left their space and settled in other prefectures and are not likely to return. Contamination due to radiation had made Fukushima uninhabitable may be for about generations and has forced thousands of people to leave their homes.
