The Food and Drugs Administration of Maharashtra is having a strict watch over the e-commerce giant Snapdeal for selling prescription drugs online. Officials from the FDA raided Snapdeal’s office at Goregaon in Mumbai on April 17, 2015.
The office was raided after it received a specific tip-off that the prescription drugs like Ascoril cough syrup, vigora tablets and other drugs were sold online. The FDA in this connection has ordered a search of the Snapdeal offices and godowns. On the other hand officials from Snapdeal said that no such restricted drugs were found in the raid and the company assured that it would co-operate with the FDA sleuths in their investigation.
Official spokesperson from the from Snapdeal said, “Though we periodically educate sellers on engaging in fair and safe sales on the platform and consequences of selling inappropriate products, at times sellers end up listing such products. Upon being notified of any such products, we delist the products and take appropriate action against such seller.”
The FDA official added that they will also be investigating office of Flipkart.com and Amazon to see if they are also indulging in any such poractices. Action was initiated against Snapdeal under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 sec 18 (c) which mentions that only a licensed retailer can sell drugs and only on the basis of a prescription from a doctor.
