Women will now be allowed at the inner sanctum of the popular shrine Haji Ali Dargah at Mumbai, India. The Bombay High Court has taken down the ban on women’s entry in to the inner sanctum of the Haji Ali Dargah.
The court opined that the ban had violated the fundamental rights and has also urged that state to protect the female devotees. Moreover, the court has given a six weeks time to implement to order.
The court has also directed the trust if Haji Ali to grant access inside the shrine to ‘Women at par with men’, however the trust has indicated that it will appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court. The decision to allow the women in to Haji Ali came after a petition by the Muslim women’s foundation that had asked the court to restore the regulation of the shrine to 2012.
Women were then allowed in to the sanctorum through separate queues and at restricted timings. In the last hearing it was noticed that the advocate general of Maharashtra, Shrihari Aney said that women have an unfettered right to worship and that no organization or trust can deny or infringe women upon such a right. But the trust had then argued that the restriction was an integral part of Islam as the Quran says that women must not touch the tombs of the male saints.
