Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the controversial godman turned actor, has been sentenced to ten years in jail on August 28, 2017. A group of disturbed followers of Rahim Singh reportedly set a vehicle on fire just before the sentence was announced. A stressful atmosphere has been created at Panchkula, Haryana due to the verdict of the court against the godman, who has been found guilty of rape charges.
Gurmeet has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two of his female followers. On the other hand the legal team of the godman has already announced that it will appeal against the verdict in Punjab as well as the Haryana Court. Reports said that the prosecutors had asked for a harsher punishment and had called for a life term.
The victim’s counsel said that 50 women had come forward and had alleged rape and that they would come forward and demand for further investigations. Advocate Utsav Singh Bais while talking to the media said, “We believe there are at least 48 more victims who were sexually abused and who may have been killed or are too scared to come out and testify against Ram Rahim”.
However, Ram Rahim has denied all the charges against him and will be heard in September, 2017. After the sentence was announced, the chief Minister of Haryana State, where Rahim’s ashram is located, has called for an emergency meeting while the capital Delhi is on high alert. Curfew has been imposed on various areas of the state of Haryana. The government has asked the army to be on standby while the police have been given ‘shoot at sight’ orders in case of any trouble. Due to the whole situation, the 50 year old convict was not taken to the court and the judge was flown to the prison in Rohtak where Singh is lodged.
