Regarding the infamous Delhi gang rape case, a Delhi court is all set to hand down its first verdict on July 11, 2013, on one of the five suspects on trial. The five suspects are on trial over the gang rape of a paramedical student on a moving bus, which has caused an outrage among the public. The incident also led to weeks of protests across the nation.
A juvenile’s court is finished hearing the case involving a teenager who was aged 17 at the time of the crime and can face up to three years in a correctional facility, if pronounced guilty. However, the family of the victim demanded that the teenager must be tried as an adult, along with five other men who were initially arrested over the crime on December 16, 2012.
The father of the 23-year-old victim said, “We want to be reassured by the government that my rights to justice are protected. In this case the accused is hiding behind legal loopholes in the system”. The trial of four adult suspects will be continuing and the verdict is expected to be out in the next few months.
One of the arrested suspects, Ram Singh, died in jail after he committed suicide.
