Soon after the launch of Nintendo’s Wii U, sales of the console have been slowing down in the past three months to June 2013. So far, the gaming company sold only 160,000 units and an overall sale fell almost 4%.
In total, the company sold 3.61 million units until now, but Nintendo says that it still expects to sell nine million units by March 2014. Nintendo also reported a profit for the latest quarter of 2013 and earnings were helped by the weaker value of the yen. The company has reported a net profit of 8.6bn yen for the three months to June 2013, compared to a loss of 17.2bn yen in the same period in 2012.
Due to the cheap yen, earnings for Japanese exporters are repatriated. The company launched its Wii U in November 2012, but titles for the console have seen certain delays in terms of development. Many video game companies have been suffering as a large number of people play games on their smartphones and other devices.
The company left its earnings forecast of 55bn yen for the year to March 2014 unchanged, despite these recent numbers.
