Olympic medallist and Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal won the Denmark Open Super Series Premier Trophy on October 21, 2012. The 22 year old shuttler defeated Germany’s Juliane Schenk in the finals in Odense in Denmark.
The ‘Khel Ratna Award’ winner pulled off the win in just 35 minutes with a score of 21-17 and 21-8. For Nehwal this is the third title win of the year; she is ranked number four in the world. Nehwal won the Commonwealth Games gold in Delhi in 2010.
Nehwal’s other noteworthy victories include the Swiss Open title, the Indonesia Open Super Series and the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold. Saina was quoted saying, “There were a lot of things which I did after Olympics which made me fresh but every tournament is tough”.
Nehwal also revealed that her right knee was not in perfect shape but thanked God for giving her the strength and energy to win the title. Saina beat the world number one Yihan Wang from China in the semifinals of the competition. The Haryana based player was also the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton in the Olympics. Nehwal won the Bronze medal the London Olympics on August 4, 2012.
