The accused in the infamous Delhi rape will be on trial starting from January 21, 2013 in a fast-track court. The trial for the case will be conducted on a day-to-day basis. The total number of accused are six, out of which one is a 17-year-old boy, who was apprehended in connection with the incident.
In the month of December 2012, a 23-year-old medical student was tortured and raped by six people on a moving bus in the Indian capital. The victim was taken to a hospital in Singapore, but died in a few days after being flown there. This incident had led to violent protests at India Gate and Raisana Hill areas of Delhi, even as the country condemns the government for not acting fast enough.
Apart from the capital, protests were also witnessed in the other parts of the country. People have demanded the death penalty for the accused in the case. The protesters have also demanded safety measures for women in the country. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will also hear petitions to shift the case to some other state.
The advocates of the accused said that their counsel will not get a fair trial in this particular case due to media pressure. The juvenile justice board is expected to give its verdict on the minor that is involved in the case and whether he should be tried as an adult.
