Indian Senior Sports Administrator Suresh Kalmadi has found himself in the midst of trouble once again, as the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has framed charges against him, along with nine other accused in the Common Wealth Games (CWG) scam. There were discreteness in the timing and scoring equipment during the CWG and the charges were framed on on February 4, 2013. The accused have been charged for conspiring, cheating, causing loss of revenue worth more than Rs. 90 crore and misusing official positions. The Secretary General of the games Lalit Bhanot has also been charged.
The new charges have been framed under the various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI has charged the accused for illegally awarding the contract of install the timing devices and scoring system for the 2010 CWG to Swiss Timing at inflated rates. This caused a loss of more than Rs. 90 crore to the public exchequer.
On December 21, 2012, the court had passed an order on framing charges under various provisions of the IPC as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act against Kalmadi and nine others, to which Kalmadi pleaded ‘not guilty’. The court said that the trial of the case would begin on February 20, 2013.
