The Delhi High Court’s panel of judges, on April 4, 2013, set aside a court order which halted the execution of a government ban on the Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel’s 3G service pacts with rival carriers.
Maneesha Dhir, a lawyer in the case of the telecom ministry did not divulge too many details about proceedings. There has been an ongoing dispute between the government and the telecom company and the government had asked Airtel to stop 3G services in the zones where it does not own its own airwaves.
The Delhi High Court had temporarily stopped the execution of the government order after the telecom company appealed against it. The court had also said that the telecom provider need not immediately pay a $65 million penalty imposed by the government.
On the other hand, the Vodafone Group Plc’s Indian unit and Idea Cellular are also involved in similar disputes with the government. The telecom ministry is dealing with several problems these days and the recent issue is just one of them. The stocks of Bharti Airtel were down by 1.76 percent on the Bombay Stock Exchange at 1.57 pm.
