After the tragic building collapse in the Thane district near Mumbai, the death toll on April 6, 2013 has gone up to 72. A Thane Disaster Management official, while talking to a news agency, said that the death toll has gone up as more bodies have been pulled out from the rubble.
More than 35 people are still in the hospital in a critical condition. The building which was allegedly unauthorised, was built in just three months and without relevant permissions and certificates. After the incident, one of the two builders has been arrested and the police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the two builders, namely Salim Sheikh and Jamil Qureshi.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chauhan, on April 5, 2013, had announced the suspension of two officials, including the Thane Municipal Corporation deputy municipal commissioner in-charge of illegal constructions Deepak Chavan and Local senior inspector of police KP Nair.
The chief minister has also announced for a probe to be conducted by the additional chief secretary of the urban development ministry. The disaster management and fire-brigade officials continued with rescue operations on Saturday, after the incident happened on April 4, 2013. Many of the victims are yet to be identified.
