Search engine giant Google, on May 2, 2013, has honoured the legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray on his 92nd birth anniversary, with a black and white Doodle on their homepage. The Doodle has been cast out of a scene from Ray’s first film ‘Pather Panchali’ from the Apu trilogy.

The scene depicts the moment where Apu and Durga are seen running through a field where Kaash flowers are in full bloom. These are typical vegetation heralding the advent of autumn in Bengal. Pather Panchali has also won eleven International prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the past, Ray has authored many short stories and novels, which are mainly aimed at children and adolescents. Ray was born in Kolkata in the year 1921 in a prominent Bengali family. The author had started his career as a painter as well as a visualiser, but had a keen interest in cinema, apart from having made some documentaries.

Some of his popular works include Nayak, Charulata, Devi Jalsaghar, Jana Aranya and Aranyer Din Ratri Mahanagar. In all, Ray has directed around 36 movies, including feature films, short films and documentaries. The author has also written a fictitious series known as Feluda.
