After an average success of Aakash tablets in the Indian market, the government of India is thinking of setting up plants to manufacture the tablet in India. Apart from the manufacturing plant, Indian government is also planning to bring a new version of the Aakash tablet.
New version of the tablet will most likely be named Aakash 4. Media reports have said that the Department of Information Technology has written to the Department of Science and Technology and asked if the Aakash tablet project could be routed through them.
Additional reports have said that Kapil Sibal, the Union HRD Minister, has written to the Prime Minister proposing a manufacturing unit for the new version of the Aakash tablet. A manufacturing unit has been proposed in the country in view of the problems faced by Aakash tablet manufacturer, ‘Datawind’. Department of Electronics and IT Secretary J Satyanarayana, while talking to reporters said, “The draft of the specifications has been prepared, formally it has to be placed before a committee… We are waiting for a suitable date to do that”.
Satyanarayana went on to say that they should not add so many features, as the cost will go beyond. The upcoming tablet is expected to have decent features, but might not have advanced features considering it will be for students.
